How to choose goalkeeper glove size 2025 — complete guide
15.05.2026 · Football Masters
The most common question we receive: “I am 185 cm tall, what size?”. Answer: irrelevant. Glove size is a function of hand length and width, not height, weight, age, or position. You know your hands — you know your size.
In this guide, we will show you: (1) how to correctly measure your hand in 60 seconds, (2) how to read the FM size chart (6-11), (3) when consciously go down or up a size, (4) three most common measurement errors.
1. How to measure your hand — the 60-second method
You will need: a tape measure (or string + ruler), a piece of paper, a pen. Nothing more.
- Measurement A — hand circumference. Wrap a measuring tape around the widest part of your hand (just below the knuckles, excluding the thumb). Hand relaxed, fingers together. Record the result in centimeters.
- Measurement B — hand length. Place your hand flat on a piece of paper, fingers naturally spread. Measure from the base of your wrist (wrist line) to the tip of your middle finger.
- Key number = measurement A (circumference). This is what determines the size. Length serves as a verifier.
Practical tip: measure your glove hand — the one you catch the ball with. A 3-5 mm asymmetry between left and right is normal, but you choose the size of the larger hand.
2. FM Size Chart 2025 (6-11)
| Size | Hand Circumference | Hand length | Approximate age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 17-18 cm | 15-16 cm | 7-9 years |
| 7 | 18-19 cm | 16-17 cm | 10-12 years |
| 8 | 19-20 cm | 17-18 cm | 13-14 years / women |
| 9 | 20-21 cm | 18-19 cm | 15-17 years / women L |
| 10 | 21-22.5 cm | 19-20 cm | adults M |
| 10,5 | 22.5-23.5 cm | 20-21 cm | adults L |
| 11 | 23,5-25 cm | 21-22+ cm | adults XL |
FM size corresponds to the standard of German latex factories we've partnered with since 2014 (Reusch, Uhlsport, Rinat use the same chart). If you wear size 9 in another brand, you'll wear 9 with us too — guaranteed portability.
3. When to go down a size (tight fit)
A "fitted" goalkeeper size is one where the fingers reach the end of the glove with 5-8 mm loose fit. Some prefer a tighter fit. Go down 1 size if:
- You have slender, long fingers — a standard size will 'float' in width; it's better to choose a tighter fit that more snugly embraces the metacarpus.
- You play aggressively on high balls — tight fit = full control in 1 ms moments, without 'emptiness' between finger and latex.
- Your measurement A falls on the upper limit of the range (e.g., 22.4 cm — exactly between 10 and 10.5). For seniors, always choose the lower size in such a case.
Warning: A tighter size leads to faster latex wear (due to material tension) and reduced thermoregulation comfort. If you play 3 times a week, stick to the standard size.
4. When to go up a size (comfort fit)
- Playing in the cold (-5°C and below) — a tight glove blocks circulation, fingers go numb.
- You're a beginner, still finding your style — a looser fit means greater tolerance for grip errors.
- Children grow quickly — parents often buy +1 size. That's fine, but a maximum of +1. Too much extra room = the glove slips when catching.
5. Three most common measurement errors
Error #1 — measuring with the thumb. The thumb adds 2-3 cm to the circumference, which translates to 1-1.5 sizes too large. The thumb MUST be excluded from the measurement.
Error #2 — tensing the hand. A tensed hand is ~1 cm smaller in circumference than a relaxed one. Measure in a neutral state, as if you were catching a ball.
Error #3 — measurement over clothing. Cuffs, sleeves, bracelets — everything skews the measurement. Bare hand, accurate reading.

FM Rule: for children always choose larger (growing fast, 6-month reach). For adults — smaller, because the glove slightly "breaks in" after 2-3 training sessions (latex warms up, fabric gives 1-2 mm).
Exception: Invictus X PRO with a Negative cut — Negative generally fits tighter than Roll Finger, so for a borderline measurement, take higher size in Negative, lower in Roll Finger. Details — see our guide on cuts.
7. What the Source Says — FIFA Equipment Regulations
FIFA Equipment Regulations do not define an exact glove size but require that the glove must 'fit the hand comfortably and securely, without risk of slipping during play'. In practice: not loose. Full regulations at FIFA Equipment Regulations 2023 (PDF).
Summary in 3 points
- Measure your hand circumference (excluding thumb, relaxed) — this is the only number that determines the size.
- FM Chart = German standard — if you wear a size 10 from another manufacturer, you also wear a size 10 with us.
- Boundary: seniors downwards, children upwards. Negative cut fits tighter, Roll Finger fits looser.
Size is not a detail. A glove one size too large means 20% worse reaction time — the extra finger space delays the moment of closing your hand on the ball. One size too small means fatigue after 30 minutes. Choose wisely, once, correctly.
Measurement check step by step
TL;DR: Measure the circumference of your hand with a tailor's tape at the widest point (excluding the thumb). Circumference in centimeters = approximate glove size. Between sizes? Choose the larger one.
Why size is critical
80% of goalkeeper glove returns are due to incorrect sizing. Glove too small = restricted finger movement, faster tears when catching. Glove too large = looseness in fingertips, ball 'slips' when catching, faster wear of the latex finger area.
Well-chosen size = the glove works with you, not against you.
What you need
- Measuring tape (or string + ruler)
- 2 minutes
- Someone to help (or measure yourself)
Step 1: Hand Circumference
Measure hand circumference at the widest point — just below the finger knuckles, without thumb.
Hand relaxed, not clenched.
Write down the number in cm.
Step 2: Hand length
Measure from wrist to fingertip of middle finger.
Add 1 cm allowance — the glove should extend slightly beyond the fingertip so the foam can absorb impacts.
Write down the number in cm.
Step 3: Size Matching
Approximate mapping for adults:
| Hand circumference (cm) | FM Size |
|---|---|
| ~20 | 7 |
| ~22 | 8 |
| ~23 | 9 |
| ~24 | 10 |
| ~26 | 11 |
For junior (Invictus X Junior):
| Age | Size |
|---|---|
| U7-U9 (child 6-9 years old) | 3 |
| U9-U12 (ages 9-12) | 4 |
| U12-U15 (child 12-14 years old) | 5 |
Always measure precisely — children grow at different rates, age is only a guide.
Step 4: Between sizes — how to decide
-
Cut
Negative(Varis) — fits tighter. If you are between sizes → choose larger. -
Cut
Roll Finger+(Invictus) — leaves more space. In between? You can take a smaller size, but if you have wide hands, a larger size is safer.
General rule: the glove should be comfortable, not tight.
Left vs. right hand
It's normal for one hand to be slightly larger — usually the dominant one. A difference of 2-3 mm is insignificant. If your hands differ by a full size (it happens) — choose the size of the larger hand.
Test upon delivery
Before first use:
- Put the gloves on your hands — they should fit like a comfortable slipper: snug, not tight.
- Fingers should touch the tips with minimal slack (0.5-1 cm)
- Wrap your wrist with a bandage — it should provide support without cutting off circulation
- Clench your fist — the foam should not wrinkle sharply or swell at the wrist
- Open your hand — no tightness
If something doesn't fit within 14 days — returns are accepted, no questions asked (provided the glove is unused and without personalization).
Common mistakes
- Choosing "to grow into" (for a child) — a glove 2 sizes too large is a nightmare for a junior: the ball slips away, and the foam wears out faster when fighting for control. It's better to buy the correct size and replace it next year.
- Checking "like in shoes" — a glove is not a shoe; it hardly stretches at all after use. The size should be perfect immediately.
- Going by the size from another brand — FM sizing = EU standard (similar to another premium brand, Uhlsport). But do not trust the size without measuring, different brands can vary by half a size.
